How to Measure Your Feet for BC Shoes
Measure your foot length at home in four steps and match it to the BC Shoes size chart in centimeters or inches. Includes tips for socks and wide feet.
Quick answer: Stand on a sheet of paper, mark the back of your heel and the tip of your longest toe, and measure the distance. Measure both feet, use the larger one, and match it to the BC Shoes size chart in centimeters or inches. Add room for socks if you plan to wear them.
What you need
- A sheet of paper larger than your foot
- A pencil or pen
- A ruler or tape measure
- A flat floor and a wall
Measure in the afternoon or evening if you can. Feet tend to be slightly larger later in the day.
Step by step
1. Prepare
Put the paper on a hard, flat floor with one edge against a wall. Wear the type of sock you plan to wear with the shoes, or go bare if that is how you will wear them.
2. Stand on the paper
Stand with your heel against the wall and your weight on the foot you are measuring. Stand upright and keep your weight even. Do not sit, because your foot lengthens a little when it bears weight.
3. Mark the points
Mark the point at the back of your heel and the tip of your longest toe. For many people the longest toe is the big toe, but for some it is the second toe. Hold the pencil straight up, not angled under your foot.
4. Measure the distance
Step off and measure the distance between the two marks in centimeters or inches. Repeat on the other foot. Most people have one foot slightly larger than the other, so use the larger measurement.
Match your number to the chart
Open the BC Shoes size chart and find the foot length that matches your measurement. For example, a 25.4 cm (10 in) foot lines up with US 8, EU 39 and UK 5.5. If your measurement falls between two rows, see the tips below.
Tips for a better fit
Socks or no socks
Our guidance is to order your usual size while thinking about whether you will wear the shoes barefoot or with socks. Thicker socks need more room.
If you are between sizes
Consider the style. A platform loafer with a snug strap may feel different from a slip-on mule. Our fit notes by style cover the known exceptions, such as Peace Train running large and Ambitious running wide.
Wide or narrow feet
Foot length is only one part of fit. If your feet are wider, look at styles that run wide, or pick open or adjustable designs with buckles, laces or stretch panels. Check each style's fit note, because only some styles are described as running wide.
Measure again
Feet can change over time. If it has been a few years, measure again before you order.
Next steps
- Compare your result with the size chart.
- Read the style-by-style fit notes.
- If a pair does not work out, see returns and exchanges.
